How to make an interest in diversity something that actually works for diversity? How not only look and talk about trans* and intersex people in the museum but actually listen to them? How to involve us –trans* and queer people– and our communities in institutional contexts while keeping a critical eye on them?  The Van Abbemuseum wants to invite you to take part in a creative engagement with our museum collection, developing an artistic dialogue with it.

In line with the current commitment to queering the Van Abbemuseum is engaged in, and thanks to the support of Stichting Vriendinnen & Vrienden van Schorer, we are thrilled to present this new project: the Van Abbemuseum launches a series of mini-residencies for trans* and intersex artists to engage with our collection from critical and creative standpoints in the framework of a current research project on inclusivity and its meanings. Artists from various backgrounds (visual, performative, etc) and with various degrees of experience are invited to apply.

ARE YOU:

Based in the Netherlands? (Your country of origin or your proficiency in Dutch are not an issue, everyone is invited to apply). -Willing to engage with the museum collection to create dialogue and reflect. - Interested in what inclusivity and criticality mean for trans* and intersex communities? Free to work on this project over 2018 for one to two months, including a brief period of residency in Eindhoven? (dates negotiable) Interested in collaborating with a research team composed by curator and artist Julius Thissen and sociologist Alice Venir? Thrilled to present the end-result of your work in a one-day Symposium?

Are you willing to engage in our project? If so, send a short bio and artist statement (max 1 page altogether) and portfolio (max 5 works) to queer@vanabbe.nl before the 16th of March 2018.

Artist’s fee and project budget of max 5.000 euros, working dates will be discussed individually.

The Van Abbemuseum is looking forward to your contribution. This is a preliminary open call so they do not expect a high degree of specificity in the proposals.
