Het Eiland/The Island

The view from the former studio at the DAI of alumnus Machteld Aardse, was a special piece of land, owned by the University of Twente. One day, this small overgrown wilderness was stripped to make way for a huge pile of sand, from which a nanotechnology laboratory arose. Aardse found the sand heap to be a great setting for performance art but was also intrigued by the story behind this small plot on campus where, in the 70´s, an eccentric artist/philosopher/ecologist, L.G. le Roy, had expressed his ideas. She made a film about the history of this acre of land, conflicting ideologies and a changing Zeitgeist, about architects and contractors, and the disposal of old dreams, set aside like old paper. The film will be shown shortly at the documentary film festival in Taiwan, but the premiere will be in the Vrijhof.
