2016-2018 Aldo Esparza Ramos (Mexico/Netherlands)
Narrative, imagination and empathy are notions central to Aldo’s work. He has made of storytelling performances his preferred medium, and he possesses an adequate theoretical understanding of what it entails to apply such notions to the visual arts. He wants the audience to ‘reflect their own experiences, memories, and desires into the story’ that he is telling. Beyond the assumption of the narrative’s meaning and metaphorical power the reality of the work must be confronted. It consists, among other things, of the audience’s actual experience, which may or may not be congruent with the artists’ intentions. Complementing theory with research of contemporary practices that approach performance with similar strategies could greatly help Aldo’s work to effectively activate the faculties in the audience that he is interested in.
