Cartography of any other week is a research project of the artist Isabel Marcos where she explores the notion of dérive as a technique for the construction of contemporary metropolis maps. The project is materialized in Espacio Trapèzio as an objects and video installation that shows a 1:1.000 scale map of the city of Madrid.
7 days walking in the city during the 36 week of the year 2012 is the starting point of the process. During these walks instead of looking to the urban surroundings, the gaze is turned to the floor, finding the immensity in the invisible details that are lying on it. These "details" are just the consequences of the daily usage of public space, leftovers that were never supposed to be found.
These drifts become archeology exercises, where objects are collected in order to discover new and alternative routes and imaginary territories that were hidden in our old routine.
Cartography of any other week aims to make visible the complexity and richness of small daily stories of the anonymous ordinary citizens who build the city, and the "legenda" is not an explanatory text that decodes the information on the map, but they form a "plane of consistency ", which includes not only arbitrariness but also generates a structure that invites the audience to discover infinite relationships between the elements.
This research project is part of Stress Test Program. Through this initiative, Espacio Trapézio aims to generate different production systems considered useful for the development of the so-called Artistic Based Resistance.
Isabel Marcos is a visual artist and architect with a multidisciplinary profile, evidenced in projects and research around street art, urban design, the city as public domain and the dialogue between art and architecture. In her work she combines different media such as photography, drawing, video and site-specific interventions.
