Derek MF Di Fabio & Elisa Giuliano: A sip 2 gaze 3 leaps
Temporarily unsettling the order of things, A sip 2 gaze 3 leaps asks not only how one escapes confinement, but what other forms of life might emerge through the act of escaping it.
Rather than locating liberation elsewhere, the work intervenes in the material conditions of the here and now. Bodies, plants, gestures, and matter are brought into unstable proximity, disturbing the boundaries through which they are ordered, separated, and contained.
Weaving becomes a way of giving form to this instability. Vegetal and bodily elements are entangled into headpieces that conceal and expose, extend and distort, troubling the body as a fixed and self-contained entity. What takes shape is neither a return to wholeness nor the affirmation of individual resilience, but an ecology of interdependence in which imposed relations can be undone and new ones assembled.
The performance opens a temporary rupture in the given order: a space for rehearsing ways of being together that are not organised through separation, fixed identities, or assigned positions. What is at stake is not another world elsewhere, but the possibility of making this one otherwise.
The performance includes two songs, elaborated and performed by Elisa Giuliano, with musical re-arrangements by Oliver Turvey:
Let the Dark Light Your Hand – Fa che la tua mano brilli d’ombra (2025). With a sample from Viet Cuong’s Water, Wine, Brandy, Brine.
Planting the Dream by poet, scholar and abolitionist Jackie Wang, with music composed by Derek MF Di Fabio feat. MINQ (2025), an extract and rework of a longer collaborative performance by Di Fabio and Wang, rearranged for APRiCot Garden 2026 ~ If Not Here Then Where? by Oliver Turvey, current student at the DAI.
The costumes are designed and made by Laura Dubourjal
