Dearly Beloved, 

Today we gather around the table. We take a seat, a task, a toast. 

to mourn, to come together, to celebrate

To make you laugh, when there is no

language, not yet, your laughter

analogous to death - what cannot be said 

says us instead. 

You may take your grief to the

table-

and in the collapse of all language and

spectacle,

may everybody become your neighbour.

To those not afforded a shroud,

or to those who were given one too soon

we cannot risk forgetting the departed

or becoming undead, 

so we tread

knowing that we owe our freedom to the corpses sleeping

beneath us.

Over the past months, our study group has delved into cemeteries as sites where ecology, writing, belief, ritual, spatial planning, and politics intersect. With consideration towards this setting and the layered histories embedded within, we gather.  We draw directly from the student-led activities, texts, shared rituals and cultural practices explored throughout the coop sessions.
