Lina Lapelytė

Lapelytė's (b.1984, Kaunas, Lithuania) practice is rooted in music, flirts with pop culture, gender politics and nostalgia.

Working between Vilnius and London, Her works engage with both trained and untrained performers to create collective, emotionally resonant acts of singing that challenge standardised notions, questioning systems of silencing and opening up space for vulnerability. In recent years, Lapelytė has been focusing on large scale site specific installations and performances.

She is best known for Sun & Sea (2019), an opera-performance made in collaboration with Vaiva Grainytė and Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, and curated by Lucia Pietroiusti, which was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.

Her work has been widely presented at institutions and festivals including shows at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Taipei Biennial, Performa (New York), Festival d'Automne/Bourse de Commerce, Paris; Solo - Public Art Munich; Lafayette Anticipations, Paris; Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels; BAM, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles; Riga Biennial and the Venice Biennale (2016, 2019).
