Associazione COVA Contro is a grassroots voluntary environmental association founded in 2013 in Basilicata (southern Italy) with the aim of stimulating public debate and civic engagement around the region’s oil industry, environmental impacts, and public health issues.
The association works to document, analyse, and communicate environmental data and investigations related to pollution, health, territory and waste, with particular focus on the Val d’Agri oil fields and other industrial sites. Through its website covacontro.org and related media, COVA Contro publishes articles, reports, chemical analyses, and mapping of environmental phenomena, supporting citizen-driven monitoring and participatory science.
COVA Contro also engages in advocacy for environmental transparency and accountability, encourages scientific analysis of local environmental conditions (including water, air and soil quality), and promotes public access to information and environmental justice. It supports principles such as the Aarhus Convention on public participation and access to environmental information.
The association is sustained by volunteers, membership contributions, donations, and occasional fundraising campaigns. In addition to written content, COVA Contro produces multimedia documentation of its activities and environmental monitoring efforts, including video documentation of events, protests and environmental phenomena affecting the region.
Overall, COVA Contro acts as a community-based watchdog and civil science platform, amplifying local voices, supporting independent research, and challenging official narratives about environmental and health risks.
