I am curious to host a space where we practice lifting and being lifted by each other.
We will approach this practice as technique, as performative action, and as a way of noticing the personal, cultural, social, and political questions that arise in the context of this act.
I am looking to critique and expand the lists below.
We live in cultures that:
-
equate lightness with value and heaviness with shame
-
reward independence and treat needing support as weakness
-
gender strength and softness
-
make care labor invisible
-
teach us to minimize the space we take up
-
???
Can we rehearse another way of being together?
A way where:
-
weight is shared, not hidden
-
support does not reduce freedom
-
being held does not mean being less
-
nobody has to pretend to be lighter than they are
-
???
Practical:
Wear clothes you can move and rest in.
Bring water.
*** (side note) In Danish, the word “lift” means “ride.”
“hej du der! - kan jeg få et lift?”
“hello you! - can i get a ride?”
I like to think about “lifts” as a ride through space on the surface of another body —
not being taken up, but being taken along.
