At a time when cultural institutions are challenged to meet the growing demand for spaces and residencies, it is crucial to critically rethink these structures with care and compassion. Olfa Arfaoui (Tunisia/The Netherlands + DAI 2024–2026) and founder of FeMENA Network, joins Marie Fol (France/Belgium), MFB, and Ashley Tucker (USA), Artistic Freedom Initiative, at the WOMEX 25 Conference Session on 25 October in Tampere, Finland to engage in a global conversation on the evolving landscape of artist residencies in the music sector. Highlighting the diversity of models — from short-term festival residencies to initiatives like La Fabrique (Tunisia) and the Safe Haven Incubator for Musicians: NYC — the panel explores how such programmes can better support artists’ practices, with a particular focus on the needs of musicians at risk, as outlined in the EU’s Policy Handbook on Artists’ Residencies.

Panelists aim to explore the various models existing to support musicians and share recommendations for hosts and participants alike, with a special consideration for musicians at risk.
