Sara Alberani is an independent curator and activist based in Rome.
She expresses her curatorial research in socially engaged art practices concerning communities and public spaces, focusing on class struggles, social and climate justice through long-term projects. Since 2020 she co-directs LOCALES, a curatorial platform for the production of site-specific interventions and decolonial practices within the public space of Rome, nominee Best Curatorial Project 2024, Flash Art Italia Award. She has been part of the refugee justice community center Trampoline House in Copenhagen, co-curating the collective’s participation in Documenta 15, Kassel, 2022. She received the international research grant from the Italian Council XI for Massaging the Asylum System, within Documenta 15.
She collaborates as a researcher and writer with NERO Editions (Rome), and has published with lumbung books, Open Editions (London), the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, and through collaborations with the DAI–Dutch Art Institute in partnership with de Appel Amsterdam and SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin.
Her current curatorial research investigates the impacts of extractivism and capitalism on hydro-ecosystems in her home region, Emilia-Romagna (Italy), especially in light of the 2023–2024 floods, conceiving bodies of water as political subjects of insurgency and resistance.
