Anna Buyvid ~ Keywords: artistic research, borders, censorship, postcolonial / Post-Soviet

Anna Buyvid is a curator and researcher born in the Ukraine (USSR), and based in Amsterdam since 2014.

Her curatorial practice engages with the notion of borders, beyond their geopolitical form to their broader social and political constructs. Through research-driven interventions, Anna investigates the functional impact of boundaries in today’s world, where no border is “natural” but rather shaped by institutional and governmental frameworks.

Her work explores postcolonial narratives in Eastern Europe, censorship, propaganda, and alternative exhibition strategies. It aligns closely with inquiries into trauma, enclosed spaces, and the politics of visibility. Central to her practice is the question of how catastrophe is experienced outside its immediate context and how its effects are processed spatially, culturally, and psychologically.

She consider curating a discursive practice, inalienable from ideological and socio-political dimensions. At the same time, research becomes a medium, a category, or a form, and new formats of its representation are vital to development.

Anna graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts and holds a degree in the history and theory. She has participated in the Gallerist Programme of the de Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam. Anna was one of the finalists of the EUNIC programme in 2012 and received a curatorial internship in Austria at transit. In 2019 Anna received the research grant BremenIDEA from the University of Bremen for her work on alternative exhibition spaces and artist-run initiatives. In 2024 Anna contributed to Fragmented Histories: Critical Writings on Cold War Legacy, the publication produced within the framework of the Creative Europe project (In)Visible Traces: Artistic Memories of the Cold War produced by BLOCKFREI, Vienna.
