It is with huge respect and admiration that we share this message from BAK's Supervisory Board: "On 30 June 2025, after 25 years of service, BAK’s founding director Maria Hlavajova will step down from her position as general director. Hlavajova leaves behind a legacy of unique international practice of convening artists, scholars, and a multitude of other social actors at the theoretically informed and politically driven base. Committed to art and political imagination, and driven by the urgency of social and ecological justice, under her leadership BAK has realized numerous globally recognized projects." ~~~~ For DAI and for countless practitioners in its orbit, BAK for all those years has been a beacon ~ a rare, precious hub ~ a school, a camp, a base ~ a tonic. No BAK without Maria: but we are relieved and excited to know that with great care for BAK's important legacy, Maria and the Supervisory Board support the transformation of BAK towards the collectively artist-led Basecamp for Tactical Imaginaries, under the guidance of long-time artist associate of BAK, Jeanne van Heeswijk.
