A guided tour of the exhibition "Repetitive Acts: The Power of Weaving and Textile in Contemporary Art" at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, Associated with the Pierides Foundation [NiMAC]. This exhibition explores the enduring role of weaving as a medium for communication, storytelling, and resistance. From ancient Peruvian textiles to contemporary Afghan "War Rugs," textiles have long served as silent yet eloquent transmitters of meaning and memory.
Bringing this legacy into the present, the exhibition highlights how contemporary artists from Cyprus challenge weaving’s domestic associations, transforming it into a medium for political, cultural, and personal expression. Through this tour, participants will critically engage with weaving not as a static tradition but as a dynamic and evolving practice. In an interactive setting, we will connect historical craft traditions to contemporary perspectives, using specific examples from the exhibition to reflect on Cyprus’s layered histories as well as the weaving practices and histories of the participants’ respective localities.
