Demetra Ignatiou
Demetra Ignatiou (b. Athens, 1988) is an independent curator, researcher and educator working at the intersection of art, museology, archaeology and archives. She holds a BA in History and Archaeology and an MA in Cultural Studies and she is currently based in Nicosia, Cyprus. Demetra collaborates with museums, art institutions, collectives and local communities for exhibitions, public programs and publications. Through her practice she explores alternative ways of engaging and interacting with art and critical approaches to cultural production and interpretation. Her recent research evolves around cyprocentric approaches and the decolonization of exhibition practices and museum narratives.
She maintains a collaboration with the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation where she co-curated the exhibition “Cyprus Insula. History–Memory–Reality” (2024). Recent curatorial projects include: "WE MET- LOVE, DEATH AND META" (2024) and "FIVE" (2023) at the Cyprus Museum and "we can only begin to notice" (2023) at NiMAC. In 2023 she curated and coordinated an international residency program in Cyprus in the framework of the Creative Europe project “Alexandria: (re)activating common urban imaginaries (ALEX)”, while in 2017 she worked for “documenta14” in Athens as an art mediator and educator. From 2015 -2016 she held the position of Assistant Director at Point Centre for Contemporary Art.
