Abstract
This thesis explores the concept of twinhood as a subversive force against Western society's dominant structures of individuality. Through a combination of autobiographical reflection and theoretical analysis, it examines how twins challenge and disrupt traditional notions of the autonomous self. It puts twinhood into use through our own twinhood and the imagining of twinhood: from the 1920s Swedish State Institute for Racial Biology to the fashion show of Gucci Twinsburg fall/winter 2023. By employing methodologies such as twin-writing and autotheory, Twinning as Rupture investigates the paradox of twin identity (always more than one but also always one), the impact of neoliberal individualism, and the representation of twins in popular culture.
