Sophio Medoidze
Sophio Medoidze (born 1978, Tbilisi, Georgia) is an artist and filmmaker whose work interrogates the boundaries between cinema and art, focusing on the concept of periphery.
Her poetic filmography delves into the tensions between ancient and modern, local and global, frequently using her native Georgia as both a setting and subject. Her filmmaking practice also extends into writing and publishing as alternative forms of image-making.
Medoidze graduated from Georgian State University Of Theatre And Film (BA in Film), and Goldsmiths, University of London (MFA). Her work has been featured in solo presentations at Tate Modern (UK), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Denmark), Beursschouwburg (Belgium), LUX (UK), Outpost Gallery (UK), and Serpentine Cinema, Serpentine Galleries (UK); group exhibitions and screenings including Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles (France), CAC Brétigny (France), Short Film Festival Oberhausen (Germany), IMMA Irish Museum of Modern Art (Ireland), Institut Français (UK), CLOSE-UP (UK), Kunstmuseum Luzern (Switzerland), EMAF European Media Art Festival (Germany), Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival (UK).
Medoidze was awarded the Sainsbury Scholarship at the British school at Rome (2024-2025), The book of the month at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson (2024), The Arts Council England Project Grant (2022), Georgian National Film Centre Documentary Film Funding (2022), The Elephant Trust Grant (2022), BFMAF New Cinema Award (2023); She was nominated for the Arts Foundation Award and the Jarman Award.
