‘Alas, Your Mother’ was performed by Chloë Janssens during DAI’s ‘AEROPONIC ACTS 2024 ~ Chameleon Orbit’ at Centrale Fies in Dro in Italy. In the abstract to their masterthesis Chloë wrote: "then I suddenly became aware that that which I was observing was a silence that wasn’t mine alone. It was an ancient sob that had been halted by a pair of eyes a hundred years ago, at a kitchen table in rural Flanders. A sob which was stuck in my throat and that I could finally name. How could I so suddenly put words to pain? It must have been the death of the Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor that moved something in me. From the diaphragm, the same breath that sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” shook loose an anger in myself. This text is a record of the shaking loose of the sob of my grandmothers."
We open our admissions campaign 2026-2028
A STUDENT IS SOMETHING TO BE
with a shout-out to our students past, present and future, who embrace solidarity over complicity, courage over fear and anger over silence.
Mahmoud Khalil: "If anything, my detention is a testament to the strength of the student movement in shifting public opinion toward Palestinian liberation. Students have long been at the forefront of change – leading the charge against the Vietnam War, standing on the frontlines of the civil rights movement and driving the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Today, too, even if the public has yet to fully grasp it, it is students who steer us toward truth and justice."
Now more than ever the Dutch Art Institute seeks to bring together a variety of praxes, languages, experiences, intuitions and queering positions, a plurivocal band of great people whom we believe will be able to connect with each other in an interesting, deep way through shared sensibilities, struggles and solidarities, rather than disciplining similarities.
DAI’s Roaming Academy functions as a permaculture in which 'studying together' and 'living together' are inextricably linked and a rich variety of praxes at the intersections of contemporary art and theory can grow and sustain each other. Thinking, writing, voicing, performing, making, organising, curating, and publishing are invigorated through fluid configurations of collective study. DAI critically positions itself within the versatile and porous domain of 'contemporary art': its discourses and its discontents.
Journeying with DAI leads to many things, among them the accomplishment of an accredited MA in Art Praxis.
