This is the sixth issue of the monthly DAI-bulletin in the academic year 2008-2009, informing you about our program and about important dates and events. Eventual alterations can be found on our website under DAI-bulletins.

DAI-week February 9 till February 13

Instead of asking its master students to come to 'school' on a weekly base the DAI offers an alternative educational environment: during one week per month (11 times per year) everyone who is involved in DAI stays in Enschede day and night and takes part in an intense program (consisting of lectures, seminars, face to face conversations, projects, master classes, courses or workshops) that lasts from early morning until late at night. During the DAI week, guest cooks prepare the afternoon and evening meals that staff, students and guests enjoy together. During the week students spend the night at one of the two DAI houses in the centre of Enschede. In between DAI-weeks all return to their daily practices - scattered over the Netherlands, or abroad.

Lunch will be served Monday from 12:00-13:00, other days from 13:00-14:00, dinner Monday to Thursday from 18:30-19:30.

Tania Theodorou graduated from the photography Department of Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2005. Since then she has worked with more diverse materials focusing mostly on installations that are informed by research into constructs of knowledge and archetypes yet infused with many intuitive aspects. She grew up in the south of Greece where her father had a restaurant, and taught her everything he knows. Since moving to Amsterdam she has cooked on and off in various kitchens, and catered for film sets and photo-shoots. Last year she recieved the starts Stipendium and cooked mostly for her self...

The introduction on the thesis shall be concluded with a screening of Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece Rashomon. In this movie the same story is told in different modes. Which one would be true?

Born Detroit, Michigan 1973, Mitch Cope works as an artist and independent curator out of Detroit. Most not ably he Co-curated the Detroit section of the Shrinking Cities Project, Berlin. Mitch runs the design/art storefront Design 99 with his wife, Gina in Hamtramck, Michigan. Recently Design 99 and the Mitch’s collaborative group Detroit Tree of Heaven Woodshop were in the exhibition Welcome to Heartland at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Masterclasses by If I Can’t Dance
The If I Can’t Dance/DAI course will depart from a special interest in the ‘performative’ and will look at elements of rituals, gestures, normalized as opposed to transgressive behaviour, covert as well as manifest action and differing approaches to role playing, power positions and appearances.

Sarah Pierce will use the concept of 'gesture' as a starting point for thinking about The Masquerade, which she links to a little book by Maurice Blanchot called The Unavowable Community. The way we come together, and the expectations that we enact are all part of The Masquerade – but whose? Blanchot speaks about the doubling of the carnavalesque: the authority of the ‘show’ that masks what is actually taking place between people. During the first day at DAI, students will reflect on Agamben's 'Notes on Gesture' (1992) and bring notes to the session. Subsequently, students will be introduced to a a documentary made in 1961 by Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin, Chronicle of a Summer. This film will be the basis of a project in SMART project space over the next days, in which the students will be involved.

Sarah Pierce is an artist who lives in Dublin where she organizes The Metropolitan Complex: a project that uses talks, papers, exhibitions, and archives, often opening up these structures to the personal and the incidental. Recent projects include It's Time Man. It feels imminent, at ICA London, de Appel Amsterdam, and Four Dublin; The Meaning of Greatness at Project Dublin, the 2nd Moscow Biennale, and the MuHKA Antwerp; and Monk's Garden in the Irish Pavilion, 51st Venice Biennale. In 2004, she co-founded the Paraeducation Department with Annie Fletcher at Witte de With/TENT, Rotterdam. The artwork as a trip, contemporary art and the idea of the trip

As off this DAI week we will delve into conceptual art of the 1960s and its aftermath: comparable developments in art outside of the Anglo-American hemisphere, from the 1960s till the present day. The texts that are up for discussion are a critical assessment of Conceptual Art by the German/American art historican and art critic Benjamin Buchloh, and a text that is both an analysis of a cultural topos ("rocking") the way it developed over time, and an art piece, and that exists in the form of a text and a film:
1. Benjamin Buchloh, "Conceptual Art 1962 - 69. From the aesthetics of admini-stration to the critique of institutions"
2. Dan Graham, "Rock my Religion".

One challenge of this workshop seems to me to consider and define connections between psychedelia, the psychedelic culture and experience, and psychedelic art, and conceptual art.
In the last DAI-session John Heymans already introduced another interesting set-up: mimimal art and music, and psychedelia (e.g. la Monte Young and Marian Zazeela). I find it worthwhile to investigate the relationship of psychedelia and conceptual art. Thus far I have not come across this a lot, and yet it is not an illogical set-up. Psychedelia means "mind manifesting", and it seems that that it was exactly this that conceptual art was after...

The evening's lecture will be presented by the artists' duo gerlach and koop, whose work is, amongst others, based in a thorough investigation of the legacy of historical conceptual art, to which they add a new chapter with an intriguing and original oeuvre. PREPARING AN INTERVENTION STRATEGY
The preparation of an intervention strategy is a work in progress - process with the clients or aimed at clients, on the site and with the officials. The participants will have to develop a wide overview of the do's and don'ts, the wishes and demands and, importantly, a 'nose' for the right intervention in the complex society of Detroit.
We think, though, that the definition of economic value, even if according to alternative value systems, reproduces the logic of the real estate market-precisely the logic we are trying to subvert. Instead of proposing alternative values, then, what if we hijack the notion of value entirely? What if we attempt to undermine the accumulation of value (ie, the logic of real estate) completely? What if those features of real estate that are currently understood to diminish or eliminate value (inefficiency, redundancy, waste, danger, disfunctionality) are precisely those that we value? In so doing, we think, we could radically shift the perception of Detroit's value: what is "destroying" the city would be rendered as projective or potential and, reciprocally, what is thought to "reconstruct" the city (optimization, functionality, efficiency) would be rendered as destructive?

Bart Groenendaal (Amsterdam 1975) travelled through Africa for a year before studying Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. He switched to the Rietveld Academy where he studied at the Audiovisual department, graduating in 2001 with the film Albino, shot in the Ivory Coast. A continuing anthropological interest made him move on to live in Berlin and Bruxells, working on several videoprojects and then to Yemen, where he worked on commissioned documentaries for the German Government. In 2008 he finished a two-year residency at the Rijksacademy in Amsterdam.
The work of Bart L.J. Groenendaal is concerned with cultural frameworks, locality and the sculptural qualities of video.

Bracha L. Ettinger (IL - FR) is a prominent contemporary artist and a groundbreaking theoretician working at the intersection of art, psychoanalysis, feminine sexuality, and aesthetics. Ettinger is a painter and a practicing psychoanalyst. Based in Paris and in Tel Aviv, Ettinger is an activist against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, and she is among the leading intellectuals associated with contemporary French thought.
Bracha Ettinger's next one-person show will take place in June 2009 at the Freud's Museum in London. Her paintings, photos, drawings and notebooks have been exhibited extensively in major museums of contemporary art, among them: Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art (2008). Bracha Ettinger has been elaborating for more than twenty years a new "matrixial" theory and language with major aesthetical, analytic, ethical and political implications that have transformed the contemorary debates in art history and cultural studies. Ettinger's ideas offer the hope that identities might not have to be achieved either sacrificially or at someone else's expense. Her book The Matrixial Borderspace (University of Minnesota Press, 2006) brings together essays from 1994-1999. Bracha L. Ettinger is at present Professor of Psychoanalysis and Art at the Media & Communications Division, European Graduate School (EGS), Saas-Fee.

A project in collaboration with the Research Group Art in Public Space in Amsterdam (www.lkpr.nl) and students of the Sandberg Institute.
The aim of the project is to develop and produce work for Amsterdam Bright City a one-day event on June 4, 2009 on the Zuidas in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam Bright City was initiated to promote the Zuidas as an "international, multicultural centre of knowledge and business services". We connect ourselves to that event to contribute diverging positions of the art and the artists to the vision of the area.
The project will partly take place in Amsterdam on the Zuidas, where we will be guests of the Research Group and the Sandberg Institute. The project will be prepared and accompanied with lectures, visits to the area and artists involved in earlier projects.

On Thursday morning Renée Ridgway will introduce the course 'Negotiating Equity' to the students, explaining some of the ways this manifold term might be interpreted. Ridgway will introduce herself, as an 'artist/curator' and show examples of her practice. In the afternoon, Ridgway will introduce n.e.w.s., giving background to how this collaborative platform came about, how n.e.w.s. contributors will be involved with 'Negotiating Equity' at DAI, along with planning to direct the content and forums of n.e.w.s. to address rethinking the economic and social conditions of art.
As n.e.w.s. is a participatory platform, members directly or indirectly involved at n.e.w.s. will be our guest lecturers during the next months. On Thursday night, Saskia van der Kroef, research assistant at n.e.w.s., will make a presentation about the position of the artist/curator in contemporary art. Friday morning we will discuss Saskia's lecture and then have time for studio visits in the afternoon.

After the virtual meeting at a distance between the Netherlands and South Korea, this is our first physical meeting together. We will start the session with sharing the feedback on your experience and work in the last one and finalizing the third correspondent-task. Then the focus will be given on modes of thinking and acting of comparison and linking in the "global" dimension. The diverse artistic practice dealing with such issues will be viewed and discussed, which will be followed by inventing our own experiments playing with the exisiting modes.

Saskia van der Kroeff (NL, 1981) graduated from the University of Amsterdam (Cultural Sciences, MA) with a thesis on the artist-curator in the contemporary art world, and is currently enrolled as MPhil student at the Art History department of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. In her research she focuses on the background, function and meaning of 'artistic research' in contemporary art. As general coordinator she worked for International Foundation Manifesta, where she recently was responsible for the reprint of Manifesta Journal, the international magazine of contemporary curatorship.

Lize Mogel is an interdisciplinary artist who works with the interstices between art and cultural geography. She inserts and distributes and cartographic projects into public space, including in Los Angeles (Public Green, 2001) and the Wood River Valley, Idaho (Migration Routes, 2007), and via publications. She is co-editor of the book/map collection "An Atlas of Radical Cartography" and co- curator of the exhibition "An Atlas". She also co-curated "Genius Loci", an exhibition of conceptual mappings of Los Angeles (Sci-Arc, Los Angeles, California Museum of Photography, Riverside). She has also worked with groups including the Center for Land Use Interpretation and the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. Exhibitions include the Gwangju Bienniale (South Korea,) Gallery 400 (Chicago), Overgaden (Copenhagen), and “Experimental Geography” (ICI, touring). She’s co-organizing the project “An Atlas of Radical Cartography” at Casco, Office for Art, Design and Theory to be on view from 14 February - 22 March 2009

M.O.A.T. The Last Record

Current DAI student Taf Hassam is one of members participating in 'The Measure of all Things' otherwise known as 'M.O.A.T.', an ongoing *interdisciplinary research project, which first began in 2007. The project in its design and nature is ultimately experimental and seeks to explore the relationships between 'interdisciplinary' groups, theoretical thought, empirical experiences and the possible representation thereof in the medium of sound. With its first incarnation in, 2007, the project began by exploring various educational institutes in and around Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The project rather than determining itself to be an institutional critique, focused itself rather upon researching and documenting the ambient sounds that these spaces contained, and by looking to how the architectural specifics of these spaces could then be translated into revealing an underlying 'rhythm' of the spaces themselves. Through the projects various developments, one particular set of questions have remained:
'What do sounds tell you about the environments in which they are found? How much information do they contain? Is it possible to create musical compositions based upon the organization of a space? If one were to arrange the sounds together, what would the representation tell us?
The second part of the project took place in an abandoned apartment block in the shrinking city of Hoyerswerda, located in the former eastern block of Germany. The project was conducted as part of the 'The European Post Graduate Residency'; a residency comprising of 30 international artists who had been selected to create works in and around the topic of 'Spatial Intervention'. As part of the residency the group invited various artists and theoreticians to give lectures as a means to further explore interventions through information sharing. The group proposed to create a 'blue print' of the building in sound through spending the duration of the residency researching, recording and measuring the building to create the last record of a space that had been consigned to disappear. ** As soon as the residency came to a close the building itself underwent demolition.

January 14 - February 14, 2009

The documentary film and video installation "A12NU" by Jeroen van Westen and DAI alumnus Julian H. Scaff investigates the area between the cities of Nieuwegein and Utrecht as part of a larger urban redevelopment project.  The works demonstrate that the way in which you move through a space affects how you perceives it.  Different means of movement create different layers of the city piled on top of one another, like multiple cities occupying the same space.  Where we block the natural flow, for instance where people might want to cross a street to go from point A to point B, flow still wants to find a way through, like a stream rushing around a stone you've dropped in the middle of it. Designing cities is really about designing this flow, about allowing the chance-like nature of the city to unfold naturally. The physical structures are almost secondary.
