Earlier this year they were artists-in-residence at The Fifth Season residency: Jan Adriaans (DAI, 2015), Marianna Maruyama (DAI, 2014) and Gerwin Luijendijk. Their time together resulted in a new video work called The Third Potential. On show at Beautiful Distress House in Amsterdam until 16 Dec.

 The Third Potential

. . . Somewhere in a wooded area of the Netherlands, three men stand attentively in front of a mental healthcare facility (their stage?), they greet everyone who enters
(their
choreography?), they perform a role, they ride their bikes around the campus
(with
props?), they follow their directors, they discuss strategies for cooperation with the neighborhood (their audience?), and they wear uniforms (costumes?). They all agree this job is different from others they have held.

What does it mean to be a security guard? to perform a role that makes people feel safe? The Third Potential portrays security guards in an abstract way and research their verbal and non-verbal communication. The nine-screen video-installation shows the paradox of protection and threat. The presence of a security team can create the feeling of safety and at the same time raise the question: 'Are we safe here?'
