2018–2020 Jiatu Gu (PR China)
Jiatu Gu holds a MA degree in Photography from the London College of Communication. His most compelling work employs photography (both in installation and photobooks), expertly using its expressive possibilities, revealing a deep understanding of the constraints of one’s public image on social media, and playing, in so doing, with visual codes of desirability. In addition, he has started to gain significant curatorial experience that has allowed him to organise a number of group exhibitions, in London as well as in Hangzhou. There is a sculptural element in Jiatu’s work as well which, when pushed towards realms of signification beyond material concerns, harbours a radical potential to engage with the economy of labour and production, which resonates with Jiatu’s second studies in industrial design (China Jiliang University). The possibility to enrich his artistic vocabulary in discursive terms will be an interesting area to explore during his studies at DAI.
