2018 - 2020 Julian Rusz (Switzerland / Roumenia)
Julian Rusz obtained their BA in the programme Cast/Audiovisual Media in design at Zurich University of the Arts. Their positioning and interest in queer theory give them a solid base to work from, to exchange, to gain skills, to take risks in a practice that has roots in dance, movement, and audiovisual media. For instance, their participation in Black Cracker and Peaches’ reinterpretation of Mozart’s opera Cosi fan Tutte at the Deutsche Oper Berlin was an investigation of love in the times of social media. Julian aims to create utopian worlds that are informed by feminist science-fiction worlds and alien creatures, blurring the boundaries between human body and machines. Their self-proclaimed ‘alien cyborg drag’ practice takes a political stance on the alienation of queer non-binary bodies and their daily struggle in a heteronormative society. Now at DAI, the challenge consists in researching the conditions upon which disrupt the fetishization of queer performance as a formal, nameable category.
