Join Tale of Tub & the one and only Daniël van der Giessen, TODAY June 5, for the continuation of Duotones: A Series of Artists Talking—a new program of artist talks organised by A Tale of A Tub and Studio Art Office/CBK R’dam and hosted by TENT. The series is an attempt to put different generations of Rotterdam-based artists in conversation, and for talk number two we’ve invited Daniel Tuomey and Eveline Visser to draw on their shared connection to the role of narrative and the staging of stories within their practices, often done through painting, architecture and text. The talk will be moderated by Daniël (artist of DAI Generation 2022).
Koyo Kouoh (1967-2025) ~ “It is very important to build institutions as opposed to careers, because those institutions will leave a legacy that promotes knowledge." ~ We are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of gorgeously beautiful, brilliant Koyo Kouoh. We will remember her for many, many things but especially for her striking generosity and her earnest teachings when she and RAW Material Company ( the institution dedicated to art, knowledge, and society that she founded in 2008) hosted all the 2011-2012 DAI students and a large group of tutors in Dakar, Senegal. In preparation of that journey Koyo also came to Arnhem in the Netherlands. Her guidance was sharp and very gentle at the same time ~ it did not fail to provoke meaningful shifts in our thinking. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, her friends, to RAW, to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town and to all who, like us, were excitedly looking forward to the 2026 Venice Biennale which she was going to curate. The loss is deeply felt.
It is with huge respect and admiration that we share this message from BAK's Supervisory Board: "On 30 June 2025, after 25 years of service, BAK’s founding director Maria Hlavajova will step down from her position as general director. Hlavajova leaves behind a legacy of unique international practice of convening artists, scholars, and a multitude of other social actors at the theoretically informed and politically driven base. Committed to art and political imagination, and driven by the urgency of social and ecological justice, under her leadership BAK has realized numerous globally recognized projects." ~~~~ For DAI and for countless practitioners in its orbit, BAK for all those years has been a beacon ~ a rare, precious hub ~ a school, a camp, a base ~ a tonic. No BAK without Maria: but we are relieved and excited to know that with great care for BAK's important legacy, Maria and the Supervisory Board support the transformation of BAK towards the collectively artist-led Basecamp for Tactical Imaginaries, under the guidance of long-time artist associate of BAK, Jeanne van Heeswijk.
