DAI-BULLETIN 6: Planetary Records: Performing Justice Between Art and Law

tag: Mechelen

Dear friends and relations,

This month DAI-week sessions will be accompanied by clanging bells as they are all taking place in the historical town of Mechelen (one of the centers of the Northern Renaissance) between March 9 and 15, where we are linking up with Contour Biennale 8 ~ Polyphonic Worlds: Justice as Medium, brilliantly curated by Natasha Ginwala (opening today, Friday March 10).

We would be delighted to see some of you join us on the 11th and 12th March in Mechelen, for the combined Contour 8 Public Programme /and our Roaming Assembly#12:

Planetary Records: Performing Justice Between Art and Law

Co-curated between Natasha Ginwala for Contour 8 and Rachel O'Reilly for DAI the program examines artists’ role in challenging normative legal foundations while transforming our understanding of response-ability to double-meanings of law/lore, and tracing the inevitably formal dimensions of present day struggles.

Live Coverage

If you are not able to come to Belgium we like to draw your attention to the live coverage of this exceptionally rich symposium at e-flux Conversations. DAI invited Federica Bueti to act as editor-in chief and to form a temporary editorial office. DAI-students Florencia Almirón, Alaa Abu Asad, Sara Benaglia, Luca Carboni, Clementine Edwards, Sonia Kazovsky, Wayne Lim, Ines Marita Schärer, Isabelle Sully and Wilfred Tomescu will take up the roles of editors and writers, alternatively teaming up to cover the events.

Roaming Academy

During their Planetary Campus days in Mechelen the DAI's student body (55 artists, activists, curators and hybrids) will engage with a wide array of practitioners, involved, in one way or another, in Contour Biennale 8, as well as with DAI's 'core' and 'visiting' tutors, associate researchers, staff and chefs alike for dense seminars, communal meals and numerous face to face meetings:

Nick Aikens, Bassam El Baroni, Eric Baudelaire, Federica Bueti, Gregory CasteraNikos Doulos, Pedro Gómez-Egaña, Jon Mikel Euba, Michel Feher, Rik FernhoutSusan Gibb, Natasha Ginwala, Florian Göttke, Amelia GroomLouis Henderson, Asia Komarova, Arvo Leo, Sebastian De Line, Ricardo Liong-A-Kong, Sven Lütticken, Basir Mahmood, David Maroto, Pedro Neves Marques, Beatriz Santiago MuñozWendelien van Oldenborgh, Pallavi Paul, Emily Pethick, Mari Pitkänen, Elizabeth A.Povinelli, Judy Radul, Rachel O'Reilly, Peter Sattler, Gabriëlle Schleijpen, Mariana Silva, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam, Jacq van der Spek, Anne Szefer-Karlsen, Leire VergaraMarina Vishmidt, Susanne M. DAI-week 6 will be immediately followed by DAI-week 7 as on Monday March 13 Roaming Academy group Southern Wave, led by Casco's Yolande van der Heide i.c.w. Cráter Invertido is heading for Mexico-City. Tuesday March 14 our Roaming Academy group In Dialogue with Robotics, led by Bassam El Baroni, travels from Brussels to Boston, while On praxis an unstated theory. (Writing out loud), led by Jon Mikel Euba and Susan Gibb is set for Casablanca. Teaching as a Form of Art, led by Ruth Noack can be found working in Salvador da Bahia till March 27.

Our next bulletin will bring you updates from these project destinations. For now I wish you all the best and fingers crossed for dangerously crucial Dutch elections on March 15 (if you are registered as a Dutch national: DO THE RIGHT THING and please let's forget about our usual leftist nitpicking - there is too much at stake, really)!

Warmly,

Gabriëlle Schleijpen

on behalf of the DAI-community.

DAI wishes to thank
