OUTSIDE ACADEMY announces last Public Forum of the 2013 program of 'New World Academy' at BAK. Session III - Leaderless Politics

12.12.13 | tag: Utrecht

We cordially invite you to the opening of the exhibition, book launch, and public forum Leaderless Politics this Sunday 15.12.2013 from 17:00 to 19:00 hrs at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst.

The notion of leaderless politics is key to the politics and practice of international Pirate Parties. Since 2006 more than 40 Pirate Parties worldwide have been founded, seeking to reshape existent models of political representation by investigating the potential of the internet as an alternative 'digital parliament.' Through the optics of the open-source principle, Pirates defend radical democratization of politics, economy, and culture. Such investigation is also present in artists' work, such as the Status Project by Heath Bunting, wherein he attempts to crack the 'code' of citizen identity; the deconstruction of the visual representation of political leaders by design collective Foundland; and the collaboration of design and research studio Metahaven with Wikileaks.

Contributors to the exhibition, publication, and public forum Leaderless Politics explore the implications of the horizontal organization structure of the Pirate Parties as well as their defense of the open-source principle as they relate to the future of artistic production.

The exhibition and public forum are part of New World Academy (NWA) Session III, taught by among others Pirate Party of the Netherlands representative Dirk Poot; Pirate Party Croatia representative Maša Čorak; artist, net activist, and co-founder of www.irational.org Heath Bunting; and Ghalia Elsrakbi and Lauren Alexander from design collective Foundland. Their collaboration with participants of NWA is aimed at developing a campaign for a leaderless political movement, the results of which will be discussed during the public forum.

As a department of Staal's artistic and political organization New World Summit, NWA is a long-term project and its future iterations take place in various cultural and political contexts throughout the world.
