This is the fifth issue of the monthly DAI - bulletin in the academic year 2003 - 2004, informing you about our program, about important dates and events.
Students: please, PRINT THIS TEXT and keep it with you as an extension to your diary.
Alterations and additions to the program will be e-mailed to you. So PLEASE read your e-mails every day.

DIARY JANUARY 2004

2004: OH ALICE !!
During the whole month DAI-students Bruno Anedda, Shih-Ying Lin, Sjanet Bijker, Luisa Monteiro and Kor Smeenge will be off and on at work in Kunsthuis Syb in Beetsterzwaag on their collaborative project Oh Alice !!
Those parts of the program that are mandatory will be attended by them as much as possible.

2004: PORTAL,PORTAL 11
Till February 29 a work by DAI-student Kristy Trinier, especially executed for the group show Portal,Portal 11(curated by Suzanne van de Ven) is to be seen in the Fridericianum in Kassel.

2004: ON A SLOW BOAT TO CHINA
At last the group of artists / tutors that join the Nanjing project with the Dutch Art Institute has been confirmed. From March 25 till April 25:  Rik Fernhout, Debra Solomon, John Heymans, Gabriëlle Schleijpen, David Groot, (Stuart) Bailey & goodwill (Will Holder), Martha Colburn, Manel Esparbé i Gasca, Larissa Zvesdochetova, Maarten de Reus, James Beckett, Paulina Olowska, Kodwo Eshun and Anjalika Sagar will participate for either a shorter or a longer period in the DAI -NAI project in Nanjing, China. Aside from the tutors and 27 students, the project will be supported in China by Ricardo Liong-A-Kong (technical support and website diary), Mallah el Mustafa ( video registration of the project), Xia Xin (interpretor), Lin Lin (interpretor) and Hilly Podde, secretary of DAI. From the 12th of January (meeting of the tutors in Amsterdam) onward all participants will be informed on a regular base.

a show by Sanjeewa Kumara who graduated from DAI in July 2003.
Sanjeewa came all the way from Sri Lanka for the opening and will be happy to meet you there.

The AKI-library can also provide you with lots of information on the famous performances he did in close collaboration with Marina Abramovic in de 60's and 70's as well as on his later photographical work.


TAKE NOTICE, new houserule for 2004: Public students are welcome to apply for studiovisits by visiting artists or private mentors with Hilly Podde. Private students who will NOT be present when a visiting artist is in Enschede have to inform Hilly about their abscence. If they don't do anything their names will be automatically inscribed on a schedule for the day.

The Silent Third / De Stomme Derde,
Which strategies are there for art in the public domain ?
A long term research project with calibration points in Holland, Germany, The UK, Scandinavia and China will have its kickoff today. Aim: the organization of an international symposium around this subject at DAI in october 2004. By means of getting acquinted project- initiator, artist Maarten de Reus http://mdereus.users.btopenworld.com/ will visit ALL public students in their studios.
Private students with a keen interest and enough curiousity in this project can apply for a studiovisit as well.
A timetable will be provided.

WEDNESDAY 14

15.30 PM Meeting and 'plenary' discussion between Maarten and all the public students in the projectroom.

FRIDAY 16

EXCURSION to Eindhoven & Rotterdam
8.00 AM SHARP departure from DAI
From 11:00 tot 13:00 we will visit the van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven: Martin Kippenberger
From 14:30 till 16.00 we will visit the museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam: Fischli & Weiss
16:00 departure from Rotterdam
Return at DAI approx. 19:00 PM
If you know people who want to join this excursion and occupy some of the empty seats in the bus, please inform Hilly Podde. Costs for non DAI-guests: 10 euro for the bus plus the entrance fees for the museums.

Wednesday-evening: large public meeting at the Grolsch-building in Enschede about it's possible functions in the future of Roombeek. Strongly recommended to all public students (see Friday 30). You will be informed about the exact time.

Start of the Roombeek-project that will result in a DAI-show and happening at the visitors centre in the reconstruction area Roombeek in Enschede in the second half of May 2004.

All public students will soon receive extensive information about the in's and out's of this AAA (amateur-anarcho-architectural) DAI-production.
